Polish kitesurfer takes on the challenge of crossing by kite through the Baltic Sea - for a total of 90 nautical miles in 15 hours.
Janek Lisewski will be going for the sole cruise across the Baltic Sea, from Świnoujście to Sweden, in July 2011. Such a feat will require him to be in a very good shape, and spend a lot of time preparing.
Janek's main goal is showing that kitesurfers can, just like mountaineers, achieve impressive feats. Achieving what was previously deemed to be impossible, setting new trends and directions, showing that anyone can overcome their weaknesses. Comparisons to mountaineering aren't coincidental, Janek already has plans for future challenges in the Mediterrenean, Red Sea and Aegean Sea. These are popular destinations for kitesurfers, and weren't chosen randomly.
Another goal for the lone kitesurfer is to draw attention to this little known sport, especially from potential sponsors and the polish government. Kitesurfing is non-existant in polish media, especially compared to other saling sports. This is despite the fact there are over 5 thousand kitesurfers in Poland, with polish professional kitesurfers being very successful in the International Events/Cup, and some of the leading kite equipment manufacturers, are Polish companies. Polish instructors are quite well known around the world as well. Polish kitesurfing industry is a big success that's very little known in Poland itself.
The lonely kitesurfing voyage will start in Świnoujscie or the nearest area, then it'll continue towards the shores of Sweden around Ystad. The whole journey should take around 12 to 15 hours. Beating 90 nautical miles will be a big challenge, requiring extremely good physical condition. Janek Lisewski has been preparing for this for many months. It's also worth adding that the expedition is funded entirely by Janek himself from his own savings.
